Ingredients

  • 1 cupWheat flour, white, all-purpose, enriched, bleached
  • 1/2 cupCornmeal, degermed, enriched, yellow
  • 1 tblsSugars, granulated
  • 1 1/2 tspLeavening agents, baking powder, double-acting, sodium aluminum sulfate
  • 1 1/2 tspSalt, table
  • 2 tblsShortening, household, soybean (hydrogenated)-cottonseed (hydrogenated)
    Diet

  • 1 medEgg, whole, raw, fresh
  • 3/4 cupMilk, reduced fat, fluid, 2% milkfat, with added nonfat milk solids and vitamin A
  • 1/4 cupOil, vegetable, sunflower, linoleic (less than 60%)
  • 12 ozOSCAR MAYER, Wieners (beef franks)

Directions

1. Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

2. With a pastry blender, cut vegetable shortening into flour mixture until there are fine crumbs.

3. Add egg and milk and blend well.

4. Pour vegetable oil to a 2 inch depth in a deep fryer or large saucepan. Heat to 375 degrees.

5. Pat frankfurter dry with paper towels.

6. Insert a toothpick into the center of each frankfurter. Dip each frankfurter into batter and then into hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper. Serve hot.
